Damage to Franja Partisan Hospital Estimated at EUR 3.47M

Cerkno, 16 October

The damage to the Franja WWII partisan hospital caused by the 18 September torrential waters has been estimated at EUR 3.47m, STA has learned from its sources. The Culture Ministry, which is tasked with the reconstruction of the hospital, confirmed the figure later on Tuesday and said the plan for the reconstruction should be ready by spring 2008.

The data on the damage to the hospital was collected by the Culture Ministry and processed by the restoration centre of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, the Idrija Town Museum and the Environmental Agency. The works designed to eliminate the direct threats to the monument will cost EUR 255,000, while the very restoration of the hospital is expected to cost EUR 3.21m.
The works will also include the reconstruction of two damaged and eleven completely demolished wooden buildings as well as the restoration of about 760 different artifacts.
The director of the Idrija Town Museum Ivana Leskovec told STA on Friday that the damage to the hospital artifacts stood at EUR 300,000, while the cleanup and the restoration of the nearby riverbank would cost EUR 915,000.
After the hospital was devastated by torrential waters last month, the site was inspected by Culture Minister Vasko Simoniti, while the government adopted a decision on the complete reconstruction of the monument, which is shortlisted for UNESCO status.
