Development Minister Ziga Turk presented Slovenia's priorities in energy for its upcoming spell as EU president at a conference on energy security in Lithuania's Vilnius on Thursday. "Energy security and sustainable treatment of the environment are two sides of the same coin," he said.
According to Turk, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, more investment in local renewable energy sources, and energy efficiency measures do nor result only in a clean environment, but also in higher energy security and independence. One of the challenges of Slovenia's EU presidency in the first half of 2008 is focusing on the Lisbon Strategy and sustainable development strategy.
Slovenia believes that the implementation of the EU energy objectives should go beyond the EU borders, as it is important for security and well-being of a wider region, the Development Ministry said.
The conference was attended by heads of heads of state and government and selected ministers from the Eastern Europe, the Caspian Basin and the EU.
Turk met on the sidelines of the conference French Environment Minister Jean Louis Barloo, as France, which succeeds Slovenia as EU president, is to take over the implementation of the dossier on the sustainable development strategy.
