Ministers Says EU Must Strengthen Disaster Response

Luxembourg, 15 October

EU foreign ministers agreed on Monday that the EU must enhance its response to disasters such as this year's fire in Greece and the severe storm in Slovenia. "We told the European Commission to draft a plan of response to natural disasters," Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said on the margins of the General Affairs and External Relations Council meeting.

According to the minister, this is of particular importance now that Slovenia is a victim of natural disaster. "International solidarity is welcome, indeed, it is urgent," he added. A proposal on the means of reinforcing the EU's disaster response was presented by Greece, which had to fight severe wildfires throughout the summer.
"The colleagues mostly agreed that the EU must strengthen its response, including with appropriate civil protection measures," Rupel said, adding that nobody was against the plan. Additionally, Austria proposed that the matter be debated by the EU's interior ministers. Slovenia agrees with this proposal, Rupel said.
