The European Parliament endorsed on Thursday a proposal for the redistribution of parliamentary seats after the 2009 elections under which Slovenia will get one more seat. Slovenian MEP Mihael Brejc (EPP/SDS) said that the decision was not final, but Slovenia's extra seat was not questionable.
Brejc does not exclude a possibility that the proposal may be changed, as the proposal endorsed at the parliament's plenary session in Brussels today is only an initiative. The proposal uses the method of "decreasing proportionality", in which national quotas would range from a minimum of six to a maximum of 96 seats, and the total number of MEPs would drop from 785 to 750.
All large countries will lose some seats, while Slovenia will be one of only four countries whose parliamentary numbers would increase, he added.
There is a possibility that seats will be subject to trading in the coming days and at the informal summit of EU leaders next week in Lisbon, said Brejc. He however believes that the extra seat for Slovenia is not questionable.
The proposal is expected to be given the final green light by EU heads of state and government at their summit in Lisbon on 18 and 19 October.
