Paris, 10 October

Interior Minister Dragutin Mate and his French counterpart Michele Alliot-Marie signed an agreement on cooperation in security in Paris on Wednesday, the Interior Ministry said in a press release.

The agreement presents a legal basis for cooperation between Slovenia and France in fight against organised crime, terrorism and human trafficking. According to Mate, the agreement would also improve the cooperation between police authorities of the two countries. The ministers stressed the importance of the Schengen information system upgrade and said that Slovenia and France, as succeeding members presiding the EU, would cooperate in this field if needed as well.
According to Alliot-Marie, Slovenia's presidency will give the EU fresh impetus, with the fact that a new member state presides the Union showing that all EU members are treated equally. Meanwhile, Mate and Alliot-Marie agreed that the system of EU presidency trios is very effective, as it enables planning for longer period of time. They touched on the current trio of Germany, Portugal and Slovenia and the upcoming trio comprised of France, the Czech Republic and Sweden.
According to the press release, the two ministers also emphasised the importance of Futura, a consultative group on European interior policies after 2010, and agreed on the importance of security for EU citizens.
