Number of Asylum Seekers in Slovenia Drops 70% Year-on-Year

The number of asylum seekers in Slovenia stood at 500 in 2006, 70% less than in 2005, when it stood at 1,550, according to the latest Eurostat data published on Friday in Brussels.

According to Eurostat, the largest number of asylum seekers in the past year came from the former Serbia and Montenegro (240). They were followed by Turkey with 60 asylum seekers, Bosnia-Herzegovina (45), Albania and Macedonia (25 each), while 105 asylum seekers came from other countries.
The number of asylum seekers also dropped on the EU level, as all 27 EU countries last year received 15% less asylum applications than the year before. The EU received last year 192,300 applications for asylum, while the the figure stood at 227,520 in 2005.
The biggest drop in the number of asylum seekers in 2006 was recorded in Slovenia, followed by Latvia (60% less), and Cyprus, Austria and France (40%). The United Kingdom received in 2006 the biggest number of asylum applications in the EU (27,800).
