Head of Upper Chamber Visiting Russia

Moscow, 25 September

The head of the Slovenian parliament's upper chamber, Janez Susnik, is visiting Russia until Thursday at the invitation of his counterpart Sergey Mironov. Bilateral cooperation and Slovenia's upcoming spell as EU president are expected to dominate his agenda.

The National Council president is due to meet Mironov on Tuesday, while he is scheduled to hold talks at the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, when he is also expected to be received by Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexy II.
Accompanied by a delegation, Susnik will also be taking part in a reception at the Slovenian embassy in Moscow and the opening of a show on the Slovenian-Russian relations on Tuesday evening. A working lunch hosted by Honorary Consul Sergey Aleksandrovich Vasilev in St. Petersburg is planned for Thursday.
Marking 15th anniversary of diplomatic relations earlier this year, the two nations have been conducting regular dialogue in various domains, exchanging regular visits at all levels. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is to visit Slovenia in October. Bilateral economic cooperation is strong too. Last year trade amounted to EUR 950m, while it has already topped one billion euros this year. Many Slovenian companies have subsidiaries in Russia, while Russian investments have begun targeting Slovenia too.
The nations also cooperate through the Forum of Slavic Cultures. Founded in Ljubljana in 2004, the outfit propagates the preservation and development of cultural values, traditions and commodities that bring together Slavic-speaking nations.
