A booklet on Slovenian as an European language, aimed at presenting the role, importance, historical development, presence and diversity of Slovenian language was unveiled on Monday in Ljubljana, ahead of the European Day of Languages, on 26 September.
Culture Minister Vasko Simoniti said at the presentation that the bilingual, Slovenian-English booklet, which published by the European Parliament's Information Office in Slovenia, the Culture Ministry, and the Government European Affairs Office "came at the right time".
Simoniti believes that "this is the right moment for Slovenian language to be presented with a neat, modest, lively-written and diverse booklet on the European Day of Languages and during Slovenia's upcoming spell as EU president."
The booklet, published in 2,000 copies, is aimed at spreading awareness about the Slovenian language among Slovenians and the European public, head of the Slovenian language department at the Culture Ministry Janez Dular said at the presentation. According to Monika Kalin Golob of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the booklet presents Slovenian language as a modern European language and contains a historical outline of Slovenian from pre-literary beginnings to contemporary language.
The booklet, which also includes the "Survival Vocabulary" compiled of ten useful phrases in all 23 official languages of the EU, will be handed out on the streets of Ljubljana and Maribor on 26 September.
