Standing Ovation for Slovenian Soprano in Washington

Washington, 21 September

Sabina Cvilak, a 30-year-old soprano from Maribor, has won a standing ovation at the Washington National Opera in her debut as Mimi in Giacomo Puccini's classic "La Boheme".

Cvilak was engaged by the general director of the opera, Placido Domingo, who is an internationally acclaimed tenor himself. He picked two up-and-coming talents for the opera that opened the autumn season of the Washington Opera, Cvilak and Adriana Damato. The Slovenian soprano made her debut at the stage in Washington on Wednesday, while she is also scheduled to perform next Tuesday, Thursday and on Sunday, 30 September.
Cvilak has studied singing with professor Annemarie Zeller in Austria's Graz and with Swiss baritone Kurt Widmer. She made her debut at the Hamburg Opera as Liu in Puccini's "Turandot" in 2003, while she has also sang at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland, the Vienna opera house Klangbogen as well as other major stages.
For the 2004-2005 season Cvilak won a scholarship of the Herbert von Karajan fund and became a member of the Vienna National Opera. Her roles have earned her many awards.
