Italian President Signs Decree on Bilingual Municipalities

Ljubljana, 12 September

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano signed on Wednesday the decree that was the basis for enforcing the 2001 Slovenian minority act in 32 municipalities in the Italian Friuli Venezia-Giulia region. Zorko Pelikan, the head of the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad, welcomed the signing later in the day.

The news of the signing was told to Slovenian media in Italy by Milos Budin, an undersecretary at the Italian government and a minority member.
The act is to be carried out in 32 municipalities, based on a list put together in 2003 by a joint committee for the issues of the Slovenian minority. The list includes six municipalities in the Trieste province (including Trieste), eight in the Gorizia province (including Gorizia) and eighteen in the Udine province.
Pelikan also thanked all those whose activities were aimed at securing the signing of the document that serves as the basis for implementing the protection norms for the Slovenian minority in Italy.
