EU home ministers reached an agreement on Tuesday that will allow Croatian citizens to cross the Schengen border into Slovenia, Italy and Hungary with ID cards only. "The final solution was acceptable for everyone," Slovenian Interior Minister Dragutin Mate told the press in Brussels.
Hungary and Slovenia are expected to join the Schengen passport-free zone by the end of this year, shifting the strict regime on land borders in the region from Austria and Italy to Slovenia and Hungary.
The compromise solution determines that Croatian citizens crossing into Slovenia, Hungary and Italy would have to possess a passport plus a paper on which customs officials could put entry and exit stamps.
The paper for the stamps will be issued by Croatia. It will contain the bearer's name and ID card and a box for entry and exit stamps, Mate explained. An evaluation of the system would be carried out in two years to keep abuse in check.
