IAAF Worlds: Kozmus Wins Silver in Hammer Throw

Osaka, 27 August

Slovenia's Primoz Kozmus won silver in hammer throw at the 11th World Championships in Athletics in Osaka on Monday in what is the best outdoor result for Slovenia ever.

In his sixth attempt, the 27-year-old Kozmus threw the hammer 82.29 metres, falling only a centimetre short of his and Slovenian record (82.30 metres).
Gold went to Ivan Tsikhan of Belarus with a world-leading 83.63 metres, while bronze went to Libor Charfreitag from Slovakia, for his 81.60m throw.
Kozmus arrived at the championships as a favourite for a medal, as he owned the season's third best result. This is his first medal at a major athletic event, coming after a series of good results and appearances in finals. His best results so far were 6th place at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, 5th place at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, and 7th place at last year's European Championships in Sweden's Gothenburg.
"I am not shying away from the role of a favourite. My goal and goal of the national team is to win a medal. I cannot promise a medal ... but it will be a disappointment if I don't make it to the podium", Kozmus said ahead of the championships.
