The Gorenjsko region will host the 11th European Masters Championships in swimming, diving, open water and synchronised swimming between 28 August and 2 September in what will be the biggest sporting event in Slovenia so far. As many as 3,800 swimmers from 32 countries will take part, 80 among them from Slovenia.
The main part of the championships will take place in Kranj, which will host swimming pool competitions. In Bled the contestants will compete in open water swimming, whereas in Jesenice the competition in diving will take place. Women swimmers will take part in the synchronised swimming competition, which will be held for the first time ever.
The European Masters Swimming Championships is the biggest sporting event in Slovenia so far with 150 staff at the Kranj swimming pool alone, 30 of whom will be in charge of transportation. Apart from that, visitors will be able to take sight-seeing tours, enjoy a meal or a drink at one of the restaurants or stay at one of the hotels in the region.
Among the star participants in the event are Hungarian 2000 Olympics champion Agnes Kovacs and Ukrainian 1980 Olympics champion Sergej Fesenko. The oldest man to participate in the competition is a 90-year-old Swede, whereas the oldest female competitor is 88 and comes from the Czech Republic.
