Survey: Rich for Gaspari, Poor for Tuerk, Rural People for Peterle, Men for Jelincic

Ljubljana, 14 August

A survey by business daily Finance of the people's preferences for presidential candidates has found that the highest income earners prefer presidential hopeful Mitja Gaspari, while the lowest income earners are most inclined to Danilo Tuerk. Lojze Peterle leads the rural vote while most of Zmago Jelincic's support is from men.

The poll involving 485 respondents questioned between 1 and 10 August found Peterle in the lead among the candidates, with 29% support. The gap to his nearest rivals has closed, as Tuerk is second with 23% and Gaspari is third with 22%. July's poll found Peterle leading by 38% to 16% and 14%, respectively. Jelincic's support also eroded in August's poll, falling from 10% to 6%.
MEP Peterle is the darling of rural voters, leading the pack with 33% in these areas. He also leads among voters in households earning EUR 2,100-2,500, among whom he is backed by 38% of the respondents, and among employed persons, where he has 37% backing.
Meanwhile, Gaspari, a former central bank governor, is held in high esteem by rich voters with household income in excess of EUR 2,500, as he tops the pack in this category with 27% support. With 14% backing, Jelincic also enjoys above-average support in this category.
Former high-ranking UN diplomat Tuerk enjoys the most support on the other side of the pay scale, as he is backed by 31% of respondents from households earning less than EUR 400 a month. Peterle enjoys the backing of 29% among such voters.
Jelincic stands out in terms of the ratio of men-to-women voters, enjoying the support of 11% of the men and only 2% of the women. Meanwhile, among young people (18 to 24 years of age), Tuerk leads the pack with 23%, while Gaspari is second with 19%. This group also has the most undecided voters - 21%, the poll conducted by Episcenter for Finance found.
Tuerk also enjoys the strongest support among pensioners, 28%, just ahead of Peterle (27%) and Gaspari (25%).
Peterle is in the lead in the region around the city of Celje (44%) and in the Dolenjsko (30%) and Maribor (28%) regions, while Tuerk holds the upper hand in the Primorsko (38%) and Ljubljana (28%) regions, with Gaspari top in the Gorenjsko region (39%).
