Prime Minister Janez Jansa said on Monday the cabinet had been extremely active in meeting the goals of Slovenia's development strategy and had been able to surpass them in the first half of the year.
Slovenia's goal is to catch up with the most developed EU states and the way to achieve that is to grow 3 percentage points faster than the EU on average, Jansa told the press. The Slovenian economy managed to grow 4 percentage points faster than the EU and the countries of the eurozone in the first half of the year. The unemployment rate meanwhile dropped by 20% in comparison with the same period last year, Jansa said. International surveys also placed Slovenia among the countries with the lowest risk of poverty, an important achievement, the prime minister added.
The government wants to maintain the positive economic trends but is also aware of the danger that the economy would overheat due to the high growth rate and rising energy and food prices. The cabinet will be vigilant, he said and added that the recent inflation hike was not dramatic.
