Esperanto Speakers to Converge on Maribor
Some 300 speakers of Esperanto are expected in Maribor for the 7th Congress of the European Esperanto Union (EEU), which will take place between 28 July and 4 August, EEU secretary general Zlatko Tisljar told the press on Monday.
According to Tisljar, the main topic of the event in Slovenia's second largest city will be "Water Defines the Future of Europe". The congress will also feature a European Conference on Intercultural Dialogue and Communication, meetings of EEU bodies and the Children's Congress hosting the delegates' offspring, Tisljar said. According to Tisljar, the congress coincides with the 120th anniversary of Esperanto. The first Esperanto textbook was printed on 27 July 1887 in Warsaw.
The EEU has its seat in Brussels and joins Esperanto associations from all EU members except Cyprus. Some two million speakers of this artificial language reside in over 130 countries worldwide.
