Health Minister Andrej Brucan and general manager of the Ljubljana university hospital Darinka Miklavcic laid a foundation stone for a new, state-of-the art emergency ward in Ljubljana on Tuesday, symbolically launching a project estimated at EUR 95.2m.
The new emergency ward of UKC Ljubljana is to be completed by the end of 2009; while an annexe to the exiting emergency ward is to be built by the end of 2008, the present ward is to be refurbished in 2009. Yet this only the first part of the project which is to be completed in 2011.
The new facility will bring together all emergency services, including emergency medical help, pediatric and gynecological emergency wards, in what Minister Brucan said would allow fully-modernised services. According to Brucan, the launch of this project puts Slovenia abreast with other European nations in emergency help as well. "The European level, which has always been maintained in the professional medical sense. The point is now to offer experts the working conditions that patients require."
Miklavcic said "today is a very important day, the most so for patients", for they will be treated in a new, modern facility. Nevertheless, she does not think new premises, new equipment and expanded capacities will be enough to provide the most advanced services. This is why the hospital is working to improve logistics, work processes and information procedures, the general manager said at today's ceremony.
The first phase of the project, entailing the construction of an annexe and the refurbishment of the emergency ward, is to cost EUR 19.8m. This is the price the Health Ministry negotiated with construction company SCT and its partners as part of talks with the bidders. Other services are to get new premises in the following phases, which are expected to be completed in 2011. In the final stage, a helipad will be constructed on top of the building, which will be connected to other clinics in UKC Ljubljana.
The whole project is presently estimated at EUR 95.2m. The new premises will be twice the existing ones, spanning over 6,170 square metres at seven storeys, three of which will be underground.
