Agriculture Minister Iztok Jarc opened on Monday in Koper the Fisheries Monitoring Centre, which is part of a EU directive that envisages the setting up of a Vessel Monitoring System and the centre.
"With this project we are strengthening Slovenia's role as a Mediterranean and maritime country," Jarc said at today's opening ceremony. The minister explained the project was worth some EUR 300,000, half of which has been contributed by the EU. According to Jarc, Slovenia received around EUR 20m for the development of fisheries in the 2007-2013 period, which in Jarc's view provides different development opportunities.
The centre will above all monitor the positions of ships and everything related to fishing, technical data, statistics and analytic matters, Jarc added.
