Education State Secretary Dusan Lesjak, the head of the project group for a Euro-Mediterranean University, and MP Aurelio Juri, a member of the parliamentary delegation to the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly, argue in favour of a Euro-Mediterranean University based in Slovenia.
Juri and Lesjak point out that such a university would internationalise Slovenia's higher education as well as the region in general. This would promote Slovenia abroad, benefit the local economy and contribute to a better inclusion of the Slovenian Istria into the Euro-Mediterranean area.
Lesjak believes that, given Slovenia's upcoming stint as EU president and 2008 coincides with the European year of Intercultural Dialogue, establishing a Euro-Mediterranean University could present a concrete form of intercultural dialogue and an additional higher education, scientific, cultural and economic opportunity for Slovenia. Juri and Lesjak agree that Slovenia still faces a lot of work if the project is to succeed. While Juri highlighted the importance of resolving the border issue with Croatia, Lesjak pointed to the logistical aspects of the project.
