The Hungarian energy company MOL wants to enter Slovenia by purchasing a stake in energy group Petrol. The idea was put forward by MOL chairman Gyorgy Mosonyi at a press conference in Budapest on Tuesday. Petrol meanwhile said it had not yet received an official notice from Mol about a possible tie-up or takeover.
According to a press release from Petrol, the interest of such a large energy company "confirms that Petrol is a successful company, and that the strategy of becoming a regional provider of energy services has proven to be good."
Mosonyi reportedly said on Tuesday that Petrol was currently not for sale, but that MOL would be prepared to enter Slovenia. A potential takeover would make it very difficult for OMV to acquire MOL as OMV holds a large market share in Slovenia. By acquiring Petrol, which also sells petroleum products in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia, MOL would get rid of the competition on the latter two markets, where it is also present, Finance says, adding that the company is a co-owner of the largest Croatian energy company, INA.
MOL has a few service stations in Slovenia, but its market share is tiny compared to market leader Petrol and runner-up OMV.
