Idrija, 22 June

The western Slovenian town of Idrija will host this weekend the 26th lace festival, one of the largest heritage events in the country, featuring a number of workshops, exhibitions and demonstration of the art of lacemaking.

The first among a number of exhibitions dedicated to lace opened on Thursday in the run-up to the festival, organised this year by the regional development agency and the Idrija tourist and information centre.
The festival also features an annual exhibition of lace made by students from the local lacemaking school. Visitors could vote for the most beautiful piece of lace, which was declared on Sunday, the organisers said.
In addition to lectures, exhibitions (including Spanish lacemakers) and workshops, the festival featured a number of concerts and other accompanying events. On Saturday an international centre was open there to promote Idrija lace in Slovenia and abroad.
While practiced throughout Slovenia, lacemaking has been cultivated the most intensively in the Idrija area, where a lacemaking school was established in 1876.
