New Slovenian Contingent to Take Over in Lebanon
A contingent of twelve Slovenian soldiers joined the UN peace keeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on 25 June, replacing the Slovenian unit which has been stationed there since December.
The rotation, headed by Lieutenant Colonel Vojko Adamic, arrived to Lebanon in the beginning of June and has been preparing to take over the tasks of their predecessors, which include patrolling, cooperation with the Lebanese army and helping solve the crisis in the south of Lebanon.
UNIFIL was created in 1978 to monitor the ceasefire between Israel and Islamic Hezbollah movement and help the Lebanese government in restoring its authority in southern Lebanon. The Slovenian Armed Forces have participated in the mission since December 2006. Over 12,500 UNIFIL troops from 30 countries are currently deployed in Lebanon.
