The centennial of birth of the first internationally acclaimed Slovenian film star, Ita Rina, is to be marked in the western town of Divaca, where she was born as Ida Kravanja.
Ita Rina (1907-1979) was the first Slovenian who managed to achieve star status with her heyday coming in the late 1920s when she stared in the popular Czech film "Erotikon" (Seduction).
The 1929-film was a box-office topper in Europe and the US and catapulted to stardom the young Slovenian actress, who was by then already living in Berlin, the centre of European film industry.
She followed her appearance in Erotikon with another excellent performance in the first Czech sound film "Tonka Sibenice" (Gallows Toni) in 1930, prompting an invitation from Hollywood, which she declined.
She instead moved to Belgrade, got married and changed her name to Tamara Djordjevic. She starred in several more films, however, never managed to reach her former fame. She died in Budva, and is buried in Belgrade.
The centennial will be marked in Divaca on 6 July, the eve of her date of birth and will include a showing of Erotikon. Matija Potokar, mayor of Divaca, meanwhile said that the town wanted to bolster its status as Rina's birthplace. According to him, the permanent exhibition on the actress is to be joined by a museum of Slovenian film industry.
The EUR 1.45m project would not just be a museum, but would also include a smaller cinema hall for workshops.
