Washington, 15 june

Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel concluded on Friday, 15 June, with a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon a three-day visit to the US, devoted to Slovenia's EU presidency in the first half of 2008 as well as international issues, foremost Kosovo.

Rupel was also received by State Secretary Condoleezza Rice and US National Security Adviser Stephen Hadle, with whom he also discussed energy security, environment and other issue. As to Kosovo, Rupel said that the US and the EU saw eye to eye on supporting the plan of UN envoy Marttii Ahtisaari, while he also called for patience and the need to prevent instability and to address the reservations of countries who oppose Kosovo's independence. He meanwhile invited Rice as well as Ban Ki-moon to visit Slovenia.
Rupel also met US congressmen Robert Wexler and James Oberstar and US senators with Slovenian roots, Republican George Voinovich and Democrats Tom Harkin and Amy Klobuchar.
