Precisely 100 years have passed since the birth of acclaimed Slovenian painter and graphic artist Lojze Spacal. One of the most visible Slovenian post-war artist was honoured with an exhibition showcasing of prints in his hometown of Stanjel in the western region of Kras on Friday. To mark the centenary of the artist's birth, a book of memoirs by the artist's son Borut Spacal was presented together with a special edition of a postage stamp and a host of other events all across the region.
Spacal won the recognition of Slovenian painting and placed Kras on the world map while still remaining modest, said the painter's friend Drago Mirosic, who also helped to set up the Spacal Gallery two centuries ago.
The troubadour and the artist of Kras, as the Mayor of nearby Komen Uros Slamic labelled Spacal at the occasion, used his art to unite Slovenians and showed the possibilities of Slovenians and Italians living together and proved that it is the art that was and always will unite us.
Spacal's rich legacy comprises paintings and drawings, tapestries, mosaics, photographs and equipment he designed for ships. Catalogues accompanying the exhibitions will give a complete overview of his work and life.
Spacal (1907-2000) is a world-renowned artist who got his inspiration from Istria and the Kras region. He received a number of international, as well as Slovenian and Italian awards. Among them was the Preseren Prize, the highest commendation for lifetime achievement an artist in Slovenia can get.
He was honoured by many awards in Italy, Slovenia and world-wide, among them the award for his prints at the Sao Paulo Art Biennial in 1953, the Grand Prix for prints at the Venice Bienale in 1958, the Italian Deputy Chamber's award (1968), and the Preseren Award for lifetime achievement (1974).
