A natural reservation was opened on Thursday in the Ljubljansko Barje wetlands, encompassing 65 hectares between the villages of Ig and Podpecje on the outskirts of Ljubljana, the Birdlife Slovenia (DOPPS) association said in press release.
The Iski morost reserve includes a 1,300 m educational path with eight points which are described in a pocket guide which the visitors can take from a special stand at the beginning of the path.
According to DOPPS, which opened the reservation, the central point of the path is a wooden observation post. A panel at the post provides information on the wetlands' diverse animal and plant population.
The panel also describes bird-friendly ways of mowing, the reservation's habitats, and the wetlands of Iski morost as they once were and as they are now.
"Ljubljansko barje is the most important habitat of the endangered Corn Crake in Slovenia. It is also one of 25 areas under the protection of the pan-European Natura 2000 network, the association added.
