Slovenia Adheres to Anti-Trafficking Standards, US Report Finds
The annual US State Department report on trafficking in persons places Slovenia in the first tier of countries, which fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking.
Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel assessed that Slovenia's progress from the tier 2 group, which includes countries who are making significant efforts to comply with the standards, is a result of the successful work of the government in this area.
Rupel told a press conference in Ljubljana on Tuesday that the country's promotion to the top group was also proof Slovenia's efforts are felt beyond its borders.
While this also presents a commitment for the future, it is yet another confirmation of Slovenia's successful work in the field of human rights protection, something which forms the core of Slovenia's foreign policy, Rupel stressed.
He moreover pointed out that Slovenia will have even more work on its hands in this area after the country enters the Schengen zone and the pressure on its borders increases.
US Ambassador to Slovenia Thomas Robertson congratulated Slovenia for its success and agreed that the State Department's assessment presented an important acknowledgment of Slovenia's efforts in the field of human rights protection.
