Mosaics and Tapestry Shed New Light on Spacal's Genius
Mosaics, tapestries and ship decorations by Lojze Spacal (1907-2000) have been displayed at the Koper-based Loza gallery in what is the first such show on this foremost graphic artist of world renown.
The retrospective exhibition, which opened on Friday evening, is part of the centenary celebrations, which will culminate on 15 June, Spacal's 100th birthday, in Stanijel, a town in the western region of Kras.
On the coast, his mosaics and tapestries will also be put on show at the Piran City Gallery tonight, while an exhibition of ship equipement will be displayed at San Marco Villa at the seaside resort of Portoroz, also on Saturday evening.
Spacal is considered to be a leading post-war artist in Slovenia and Italy. His prints in particular earned him international fame. He was born in Trieste on 15 June 1907, while he died in the village of Auresina, near Trieste.
Istria and the region of Kras figure prominently in his art and he spent a lot of time in his house in the village of Skrbina in Kras, where he is also buried.
Spacal was honoured by many awards in Italy, Slovenia and world-wide, among them the award for his prints at the Sao Paulo Art Biennial in 1953, the Grand Prix for prints at the Venice Biennale in 1958, the Italian Deputy Chamber's award (1968), and the Preseren Award for lifetime achievement (1974).
