Slovenian Cyclers Complete 1,400km Journey to Brussels
Four Slovenian cyclers arrived at Place Jourdan in Brussels on Saturday, completing a 1,400 kilometre-long trip which they embarked on in the Slovenian town of Rogaska Slatina on 2 June.
The group was welcomed in Brussels by Ciril Stokelj, deputy head of the office of the president of the European Parliament, who labelled the cycling marathon as Slovenia's "symbolic journey" across Europe as the country's promotion ahead of its stint as EU president in the first half of 2008.
The four cyclers crossed Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Belgium in eight stages to arrive in Brussels, where they were cheered by a group of Slovenians to the tunes of popular Slovenian oompah music.
Cycling enthusiasts from the eastern village of Mestinje have made it their goal to cover a long destination every year. Their first major project was in 2004, when they cycled from Mestinje to Vir in Croatia, while they crossed the Balkans all the way to Tirana and Belgrade in 2006.
