Carthusian Monastery to Stage Historical Spectacular
An international spectacle "Fiery Carthusian Monastery" is to take place in the Zice Monastery in northeastern Slovenia on 21 and 22 July, to mark the events of 13 March 1531, when Turks broke into the monastery "with fire" and killed twelve monks.
The event will feature around 260 participants from nine countries, while more than 1,000 visitors are expected, Znidarsic of the institute Moj Aron, the organiser of the event, told the press on Tuesday.
There will be a Mediaeval market where visitors can get acquainted with the customs and work of the monks and see a performance by the Czech fencing group Merlet.
At the end of the event, visitors will be looking for a "treasure" together with the "Turks", she added.
According to the director of the institute, Andrej Znidarsic, the event is aimed at presenting the Zice monastery as an outstanding cultural site.
The monastery, which opened in 1160 and closed in 1560, was at its pinnacle between 1391 and 1410, when it was the seat of the prior general of the Carthusian order and took over the role of the main monastery from the French Carthusian monastery.
According to travelogues written by the secretary of the Bishop of Aquileia, Paolo Santonino, who visited the Zice monastery in 1487, the monastery library had more than 2,000 books, topped at the time only by the Vatican library.
