EU ministers responsible for spatial planning adopted on Friday the EU Territorial Agenda. Slovenia supports the document which brings spatial aspects to European policies, Slovenia's Environment and Spatial Planning Ministry has told STA.
According to the ministry, the participants discussed key challenges for EU's spatial development, with Slovenia's Environment and Spatial Planning Minister Janez Podobnik stressing climate change in his address.
Podobnik pointed to the importance of spatial instruments in combating the consequences of climate change and the importance of efficient planning and called for an integral approach. He mentioned the framework agreement on the Sava river basin that sees Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia working together in the development of the region.
Slovenia wants to stress integral approaches to solving development challenges in cities and regions during its spell as EU president in the first half of 2008, he added. Such an approach is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, regulating EU's energy supply and cutting the price of energy and its consumption, the ministry said.
The aim of the Territorial Agenda is to mobilise the potentials of European regions and cities regarding sustainable economic growth, boost Europe's competitiveness in the world by establishing novel ways of utilising its territorial diversity and bringing Europe closer to its citizens.
On Thursday, the first day of the meeting, the ministers adopted the Leipzig Charter on sustainable European cities.
