The search for the governor of Slovenia's central bank continues as former finance minister Dusan Mramor turned down President Janez Drnovsek's offer to stand for the post of Banka Slovenije governor.
Explaining his decision, Mramor said that to stand would be irresponsible towards the Ljubljana Economics Faculty, where he currently works as a lecturer, regardless of the chances of his election in parliament. Finance Minister Andrej Bajuk and some deputy group leaders labelled Mramor's decision as "personal".
Drnovsek will continue his search for a suitable candidate. The top post at the central bank is vacant since Mitja Gaspari's six-year term ended on 1 April and he failed to secure reelection in parliament in February as Drnovsek's first nominee for the job. President's second nominee failed to get support as well - Andrej Rant suffered the same fate as Gaspari, as the coalition rejected the motion. Drnovsek also offered the post to economist Joze Mencinger, but withdrew the offer once he consulted with Prime Minister Janez Jansa, while economists Velimir Bole and Mojmir Mrak rejected Drnovsek's offer right away.
Three centre-right coalition parties have meanwhile urged President Janez Drnovsek to explain his actions regarding the nomination of the central bank governor. The National Assembly is to discuss the request next week. Meanwhile, the opposition Social Democrats (SD) and Liberal Democrats (LDS) said the request was incomplete and did not fulfill the criteria to enter parliamentary discussion.
