Slovenian Rescue Teams Take Part in Rescue Exercise
Slovenian protection and rescue agencies staged a sea rescue exercise entitled Morje 2007 on Saturday. The scenario simulated a crack leaking oil in the hull of a ship on fire, with three wounded people on board. Defence Minister Karl Erjavec labelled the exercise as successful.
According to Erjavec, the exercise showed Slovenia is well prepared to respond to such accidents and added that he would meet with representatives of Environment and Spatial Planning Ministry to discuss the urgent purchase of a vessel for oil spill cleanup.
Erjavec underlined the importance of such exercises and said they should be organised more frequently, as last such exercise took place in 2000. They should also include other scenarios, not only naval ones, he added.
Commander of Slovenian Civil Protection and Rescue Agency Bojan Zmavc said the main goal of the exercise was to test the response times and synchronous cooperation of all protection and rescue agencies.
Zmavc was satisfied with the performance of the rescue teams, saying the exercise demonstrated considerable improvement compared to the one in 2000.
