Voter Approval Rating for Govt at Its Lowest So Far

Ljubljana, 28 May

The public approval rating for the Janez Jansa centre-right government has hit the lowest point so far, while President Janez Drnovsek enjoys more confidence among the public than the prime minister, a Ninamedia poll has shown.

According to the survey, commissioned by daily Dnevnik and commercial broadcaster POP TV, less than 40% of those questioned believe the government is successful, while 51% think the opposite.
This means the cabinet's rating is down 6 percentage points to 39.2% over the month before, Dnevnik comments on the results in Monday's edition.
The results of the survey also show that 51.8% of those questioned trust President Drnovsek more than they trust Prime Minister Jansa, while 30.2% place more trust in Jansa.
Dnevnik believes Drnovsek's advantage over Jansa may be in part put down to the intelligence scandal in which the government declassified documents indicating that the SOVA security and intelligence agency had paid for an airline ticket for Drnovsek's healer from its special-ops funds.
As many as 57.8% of those questioned do not think the purchase should be at issue.
The Vox populi poll, carried out monthly by the Ninamedia polling agency, also shows that Borut Pahor, leader of the opposition Social Democrats (SD), remains the most popular political figure in the country and that his party enjoys the highest voter approval rating among all parliamentary factions.
While the biggest opposition party would be supported by 28.8% (25.3% in April) of those questioned in an election, Jansa's Slovenian Democrats (SDS) would get 20% (20.4% in April) and the opposition Liberal Democrats (LDS) 7.2% (7.9% in April).
The junior coalition People's Party (SLS) and the opposition National Party (SNS) would get 3.4% each, followed by the junior coalition Pensioners' Party (DeSUS, 1.3%) and New Slovenia (NSi, 1.2%).
The poll was conducted between 22 and 24 May among 700 people.
