Slovenia is to host this week in Bled a three-day meeting of the Regional Commission of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) for Europe, with the discussion focusing on innovation and adjustment to changes in tourism, head of the Tourism Directorate at the Economy Ministry, Marjan Hribar, told the press on Monday.
According to Hribar, the organisers are expecting between 100 and 140 participants from Slovenia and abroad, including UNWTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli.
The commission is to hold on Wednesday a meeting on which the participants will coordinate their viewpoints ahead of the UNWTO General Assembly in Colombia, while Thursday and Friday are reserved for the technical part of the conference.
The participants will discuss how traditional tourist countries have modernised what they offer and the way new tourist destinations are acquiring new markets. They will also discuss changes in the promotion of tourism brought by innovation in transport and information technology, said Hribar.
On Friday, the participants are to discuss adjustments to changes and response to new challenges, while the meeting will conclude with a round-table debate on European experience in innovation in tourism, added Hribar.
Slovenia, which has been a permanent member of the UNWTO since 1992, applied to host the meeting at last year's regional meeting in Kazakhstan. The Economy Ministry is also considering applying to host the General Assembly in 2009.
The UNWTO, which has 150 members, is the leading international organisation dealing with tourism. It has the status of a specialised UN agency since 2004, when tourism was put among the priorities of the world organisation.
