Slovenia's Ambassador to the United States Samuel Zbogar successfully completed his first full marathon in Cleveland on Sunday after having run half-marathons in Texas, Tennessee and Washington DC in a bid to raise money for the Slovenian-run International Trust Fund for Demining (ITF).
Zbogar was cheered by a crowd of ethnic Slovenians from Cleveland flying the Slovenian national flags to the loud tunes of oompah from the accordions. His team of runners included Zvone Zigon, consul general in this city with a large Slovenian community.
Zbogar has already topped his goal of raising US$ 38,000 for the ITF, while the US State Department has promised to match the sum with its own donation. The funds will go to six children from Bosnia-Herzegovina who were severely injured by landmines and now need new prostheses.
Zbogar's campaign is organised in cooperation with the Marshall Legacy Institute, an international humanitarian organisation which assists nations in building mine clearance and landmine awareness programs.
