"Opa, Europa" to Bring EU Closer to Slovenians

Ljubljana, 16 May

"Opa, Evropa", a book aimed at promoting the EU among the young, was presented in Ljubljana on Wednesday. European Affairs State Secretary Janez Lenarcic said that the book - a translation of the Austrian book "The EU for you!" - presented the EU in a comprehensible way without the European lingo.

The book is a simplified guide through the maze of EU politics, he added, explaining that beside chapters on the work, tasks and history of the EU, the book also contained a chapter on Slovenia and the EU.
To bring the EU even closer to the reader the book also provides concrete examples, from a day in the life of a MEP to a record of an EU Council meeting, Lenarcic explained.
The book is not only a teaching aid for the young, it is also extremely useful for all people, Education and Sport Minister Milan Zver said at the presentation.
Zver hopes that the book will contribute to the widening of European dimensions in schools. Europe is connected through mutual values and these should be passed on to all generations that enter schools, he added.
One of the authors of the Austrian original Wolfgang Boehm explained that the book was written especially because Austria was one of the biggest eurosceptics. The book aims to show the positive sides of the EU membership and presents the opportunities that the bloc has to offer, he added.
