Jansa: Slovenian Army Has Kept Its Honour
Prime Minister Janez Jansa believes that the Slovenian Armed Forces have managed to keep honour as one of their most important foundations. Jansa, speaking in Ljubljana on Tuesday at the ceremony marking Slovenian Armed Forces Day, added that the army has faced tough work since Slovenia's independence.
"After the war for independence, the army was tasked with securing and protecting the Slovenian statehood, and then had to face hard work in introducing NATO standards and meeting international obligations", Jansa said.
Jansa said that being a soldier was not an ordinary profession, as it was hard and responsible work which exposed every individual to extreme risks.
"That work has not been rewarded and paid adequately," said the Prime Minister, adding that the most urgent problems in the military would be regulated with an upcoming act on employment in the armed forces.
The Chief-of-Staff, Lieutenant General Albin Gutman, meanwhile said that Slovenian Armed Forces Day was an opportunity for the army to proudly look back on its past and remember its cornerstones of growth and development.
The army was formed when Slovenia needed it the most. It still serves the country today and it will serve it in the future, added Gutman.
The ceremony was also attended by Defence Minister Karl Erjavec, Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, Interior Minister Dragutin Mate, Public Administration Minister Gregor Virant, and numerous representatives of the Slovenian army and foreign embassies.
