Slovenian artist Saso Sedlacek opened on Wednesday his "Recycling Strategies" at the European Commission building in Brussels. "We do not get rid of waste just by throwing it away," EU Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik described the relevance of the exhibition which highlights potential uses of waste.
The exhibition consists of five display panels that feature creations from waste, including from recycled paper, digital data, computer equipment and space debris.
The project was four years in the making and stresses the ever-increasing amount of waste and the possibilities that such waste creates as a resource for people and inspiration for artists.
A part of the project is also a home-made "laboratory" for recycling that everybody can construct from waste materials. The laboratory also sparked interest from Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas.
Potocnik said that the questions posed by Sedlacek are highly relevant and that recycling brings benefits to the recycler as well as the environment.
Sedlacek also presented his exhibition to Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia.
This is the third in a row of Slovenian exhibitions at the building. The Foreign Ministry-sponsored project will conclude in September with Marko Peljhan's "Macrolab".
