Theatre Extravaganza "Bacchae" to Tour Turkey
A theatre-musical extravaganza, "The Bacchae", starring a Slovenian pop icon, is to tour the stages of Turkey in the following week, according to the Nova Gorica-based SNG theatre, which produced the play in cooperation with the Trieste-based Slovenian theatre.
The ensemble of the two theatre houses will start the tour in Adana, where it will perform at the Sabanci international theatre festival on Thursday and Friday. On 24 April the companies will stage Euripides's tragedy in Istanbul.
The performance, directed by Vito Taufer, is a combination of archaic and contemporary elements. Beside actors from the two theatre ensembles the play also features renown musicians and pop singers, such as Helena Blagne, Lara Baruca, Leticia Yebuah and Ylenia Zobec.
"The Bacchae" is a classical Greek tragedy about Theban women who worship Dionysus, the god of wine. The Theban king Pentheus wants to prevent the orgiastic veneration of the new god.
Dionysus suggests Pentheus to dress as a woman and join the party. The Bacchae recognise him and tear him apart and the queen Agave tears his head off, not realizing he is her son. She triumphantly heads for the city where she realises what happened.
The play premiered in Trieste on 20 October 2006, while the opening night in Nova Gorica was on 9 November.
