City Museum Starting Series of Events on Diversity
The Ljubljana City Museum is starting a series of events designed to showcase diversity with an exhibition on the Jewish religion and culture Monday evening. On Sunday the visitors will have a chance to taste some typical Jewish dishes and try a few traditional dance steps.
As part of the "Week of Jewish Community", the community members will also present at a panel on Thursday the challenges of life in Ljubljana.
The author of the "Museums Connect" project Janja Rebolj told the press that people sometimes had problems coping with the capital's diversity. The years' long project aims to present this diversity, especially religious communities.
The Jewish Community of Slovenia secretary Mojca Cmrekar said that Jews had been present in Ljubljana for centuries. She welcomed the exhibition, because in her opinion Slovenians do not know much about Judaism.
According to the Jewish Community, there are between 400 and 600 Jews in Slovenia, 150 of whom are members of the association. Meanwhile, only 28 people declared themselves as Jews in the 2002 census.
Visitors to the museum will have a chance to select the next group that will be presented as part of the project. They can give their suggestions at the exhibition or on the museum's website.
