European Heritage Label Plaque Unveiled at Zale Cemetery

Ljubljana, 16 April

A plaque was unveiled on Monday at Zale, Ljubljana central cemetery, at a ceremony marking the awarding of the European Heritage Label to the Garden of All Saints, the part of the cemetery designed by Slovenia's greatest architect Joze Plecnik.

Zale was awarded the label at the meeting of the European Heritage Label initiative in Madrid on 25 January.
Zale reveal remarkable respect for the dead. By expressing the reverence for the dead, Plecnik stressed their equality, Slovenia said when applying for the honour.
Plecnik worked on the project of the central cemetery between 1938 and 1941. Instead of a central funeral parlour he designed a complex of intimate rooms, where people can bid their last farewell to their relatives.
The European Heritage label was designed to emphasise the meaning of diversity and inter-cultural dialogue in the EU and promote the significance of cultural heritage as one of the most important elements of national identity, common values and life principles of European nations and countries.
The countries nominate the sites themselves and the nominations are then presented at the meeting of the European Heritage Label council, which comprises culture ministers of the EU countries or their representatives.
Two other Slovenian sites received the European Heritage Label in January; the Franja partisan hospital (W) and the Javorca Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit (W).
