Valic Climbs All Alpine Highpointers in Winter Conditions

Ljubljana, 13 April

Miha Valic has recently become the first man to have climbed all major 4,000-metre peaks in the Alps in winter conditions. It took the Alpine guide from Ljubljana 102 days to climb all 82 highpointers on the official list of the UIAA, the International Climbing and Mountaineering Organisation.

The 28-year-old Valic initially planned to finish his venture in 82 days, but was delayed by unfavourable weather conditions, so that he completed his challenge on 7 April.
This is not the first time someone has made such an attempt. Two British mountaineers climbed 75 peaks in the summer of 1993, followed by similar attempts in 2004 and 2006, which however failed due to an accident and bad weather.
Valic said the total of ascents he made during the challenge topped 60 kilometres, ridges excluded. The biggest problem for him was bad weather and fatigue. "Winter in the Alps is something special. All mountain huts are closed and I was alone out there except for my climbing companions, who took turns accompanying me."
