Italian Official Writes to PM Jansa over Railroad Plans
Riccardo Illy, premier of the Italian Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, has addressed a letter to Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa over the environmental impact of a planned railroad link between the Slovenian port of Koper and the transport hub of Divaca, public broadcaster Radio Slovenija reported on Wednesday.
According to the Radio Slovenia, Illy requested that the Italian region be included in the cross-border environmental impact assessment of the route which is a part of the 5th pan-European transport corridor.
Illy also said that parts of the track would be visible from Trieste and would run close to small lakes in the Italian border municipality of Muggia and added that the planned route included a 630-metre-long and 70-metre-tall bridge which would be constructed only some 50 metres from the Italian border.
Illy also notified Italian Environment Minister Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio of his request which is based on an agreement between the two governments.
A few months ago Slovenia requested to be included in a cross-border environmental impact assessment of plans to build two liquefied natural gas terminals in the Gulf of Trieste, a project that has been supported by Illy.
