Bilingual Book Brings History of Two Slovenian Monasteries
Historian Guenther Bernhard of the Graz University presented at the Maribor Faculty of Arts on Monday his monograph "Documenta Patriarchalia Res Gestas Slovenicas Illustrantia", which brings documents on Slovenian monasteries in Sticna and Gornji grad.
The book includes documents on the monasteries, both established by Aquileia Patriarch Pilgrim I of Ortenbourg, as well as discussions, pictures and registers, in German and in Slovenian. It covers the period between 1120 and 1251.
The documents come from the Patriarchate of Aquileia, the episcopal see in Northeastern Italy which ruled over Slovenian territory until the middle of 18th century when it collapsed, and both monasteries.
Bernhard explained that he did not want to compete with Slovenian historians with the book. Instead, it was intended as a study of more than 200 years of common history of two neighbouring countries that are now both part of the common Europe, he said.
Vincenc Rajsp, the director of the Slovenian Science Institute in Vienna, explained that the decision to publish the book in German and Slovenian was right, because this was one of the ways to encourage cooperation of scientists from Austria and Slovenia. Being bilingual, the book will also reach more readers, he said.
