The Government Communication Office and the European Commission signed on Friday a communication management partnership agreement with the aim to bring EU issues closer to the public.
The agreement was signed by the Government Communication Office director Gregor Krajc and the head of the Commission's Directorate General for Communication Claus Soerensen.
It binds the two sides to carry out joint communication activities in the following four years. This year the commission will allocate EUR 300,000 for the projects.
Soerensen explained that the Commission would fund certain projects and events organised by the Government Communication Office, in a bid to keep European affairs firmly on the agenda of the citizens.
He added that the signing was an example for other EU countries.
We are in the same boat in communicating the European topics, Krajc said. "Together", the slogan marking the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, is not only a slogan, it is a method of work, a fact demonstrated by today's signing, he added.
The agreement covers five projects. The government office will organise ten discussions on European affairs around Slovenia, and publish a DVD aimed at informing the young about the EU, which will be sent to primary and secondary schools, Krajc explained.
The Communication Office will also organise a conference on the EU foreign policy, which will focus on the Middle East.
One of the projects is a publication "Stroll around the EU", which is to present the EU to people prior to Slovenia's EU presidency in the first half of 2008, and will be sent to all Slovenian households.
Slovenia is the second EU member to sign such an agreement.
