Oldest European Book Fair Shines Spotlight on Slovenia

Leipzig, 22 March

The oldest book fair in Europe opened its doors on Thursday in Germany's Leipzig. The fair, which traces its history to the second half of the 15th century, is focusing this year on Slovenia as part of its programme to promote Central and Eastern European literature.

The Slovenian presentation kicked off last Thursday and featured Slovenian authors whose works have been translated into German, including writers Boris Pahor, Drago Jancar, Brina Svit and Suzana Tratnik alongside poets Tomaz Salamun and Ales Steger.
The Slovenian authors will not only be present at the Slovenian stand, but will also participate in numerous readings, discussions and panels over the next four days.
Slovenian philosophers at the fair include Mladen Dolar and, arguably Slovenia's best known writer and philosopher, Slavoj Zizek.
The country is additionally being represented by a host of gastronomic delights, some of Slovenia's best wines, as well as host a number of foreign guests.
Slovenia's appearance at the fair is financed by the Culture Ministry.
