Drnovsek and Ban Discuss Kosovo, Iran and Darfur

New York, 21 March

President Janez Drnovsek met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York on Wednesday. The office of the secretary general as well as Drnovsek's office have confirmed that the pair discussed Kosovo, Iran and Darfur.

Drnovsek's office said that the president presented his take on the possible solution to the Iran nuclear standoff.
Regarding Kosovo, Drnovsek voiced support for the plan by special UN envoy for the status of Kosovo, Martti Ahtisaari, and added that the UN Security Council should take a decision as soon as possible.
In talks on Darfur, Drnovsek acquainted Ban with his views and a possible political solution for the crisis.
The Slovenian Mission to the UN, which organised the meeting, refused to reveal detailed contents of the talks, while Drnovsek was not available for comments after the meeting.
The mission said that it was not arranging any other meetings for Drnovsek within or outside the framework of the United Nations in the coming days.
Drnovsek's visit to New York is to last until Tuesday. According to the scarce information available about his plans, he is to take part on Monday in a meeting of Humanitad, an NGO promoting inter-religious and intercultural tolerance.
The Humanitad meeting comes ahead of the Global Impact Forum, which will be held in Jerusalem in September. Drnovsek is a member of forum's board.
Drnovsek has recently written to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, expressing concern over the tense developments involving Iran's nuclear programme. He offered his services in seeking a diplomatic solution to the issue.
