Ljubljana, 20 March

President Janez Drnovsek is on his way to New York, where he is to meet on Wednesday UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for talks that will focus on global crisis spots, foremost Darfur and Iran, the president's office said.

Drnovsek recently wrote a letter to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, expressing his concern over the tense situation regarding the Iranian nuclear programme. The president also offered his help in finding a political solution to the dispute between Iran and the West.
The Slovenian president had discussed the issue with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed Elbaradei in an unannounced visit to Vienna on 6 March.
According to the president's office, Ahmedinejad replied to Drnovsek, saying that Iran wanted peace and that it would use its nuclear programme solely for peaceful purposes. The answer was forwarded by Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki during a visit to Ljubljana on 14 March.
In their meeting, Drnovsek and Mottaki discussed possibilities for finding a concrete solution to the standoff. Drnovsek now intends to discuss possible solutions to the crisis with Ban, the president's office added.
Drnovsek is also to attend in New York next Monday a preparatory meeting for the Global Impact Forum, which will be held in Jerusalem in September. The meeting is organised by the NGO Humanitad, which is promoting inter-religious and intercultural tolerance.
