A joint proposal of the Slovenian government and the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED) on the establishing of a Mediterranean university received wide support at the third Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly meeting held this weekend in Tunis, the Ministry of Higher Education said in a press release on Sunday.
According to the ministry, Deputy Parliament Speaker Marko Pavliha, who headed the Slovenian delegation presenting the project, proposed Slovenia's Piran as one of the seats of the university.
The final proposal on the Mediterranean university is to be drafted until the June Euro-Mediterranean ministerial conference on higher education and science by a special task group that is to be appointed by the office of the assembly next month. Slovenia expects Pavliha to be one of the group's members.
The Slovenian delegation in Tunis, also comprised of Deputy Speaker of Parliament Vasja Klavora, MP Aurelio Juri and Mitja Grbec of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, moreover held an informal meeting with European Parliament President Hans-Gert Poettering.
The Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly was established in 2003. It has 240 members, which include representatives of national parliaments from 25 EU member states, representatives of national parliaments from ten Mediterranean partner states and MEPs.
